| This product transforms tap water into pure, healthy, great tasting water that rivals bottled water at a fraction of the price. The unit easily fits in the refrigerator (most consumers prefer chilled water) and provides convenient dispensing by the entire family. | |
|
During earlier concept stages various proportions were explored and compared with rival products: We built concept models with varied heights, widths, depths and aesthetics while keeping the water volume (capacity) constant. Different filling, carrying and dispensing strategies were also evaluated. |
Our research firmly established that consumers preferred to use the top refrigerator shelf for milk, juice and water (in pitchers) and that they coveted every square inch of that space. Competitor's water filtration dispensers have a low, wide footprints. Our design for the new PUR water filtration dispenser is tall and slim, which leaves much more useable shelf space, without sacrificing capacity. |
|
Handmade models of various dispenser/valve concepts represent four different activation methods: pinch-button, push-down-button, pull-down-lever, and flip-down valve. The pull-down-lever concept was selected for the final design because it was easy enough for a child to use (the long lever improves mechanical advantage) while ensuring long-term reliability. |

Realistic appearance renderings (examples left and below) allowed final evaluation of the design prior to tooling. We explored form refinements, the impact of clear vs. opaque components, as well as combinations of various colors and tints. |
| Our Pro/Engineer 3-D database of the dispenser enabled us to change the overall shapes and modify wall thicknesses while maintaining the exact desired water volume (capacity). The database also allowed rapid prototyping (stereolithography) of components during the development process to verify assembly, fit and function. |
